What Is a Catalytic Converter?

A catalytic converter (often referred to as a CAT) is a critical component in your vehicle’s exhaust emissions system. Its job is to reduce harmful pollutants in exhaust gases before they’re released into the atmosphere.
Its Purpose:
A catalytic converter transforms toxic gases such as:
- Hydrocarbons (HC)
- Carbon Monoxide (CO)
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) a

This chemical process is called catalysis.
How Does a Catalytic Converter Work?
Though it may resemble a muffler from the outside, the catalytic converter is a highly engineered component made with precious metals like:
