What Is a Catalytic Converter?
Essential for Emissions. Crucial for Performance.
A catalytic converter (often referred to as a CAT) is a critical component in your vehicle’s exhaust emissions system. Its job is to reduce harmful pollutants in exhaust gases before they’re released into the atmosphere.
Its Purpose:
A catalytic converter transforms toxic gases such as:
- Hydrocarbons (HC)
- Carbon Monoxide (CO)
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) a
…into safer substances like:
- Carbon Dioxide (CO₂)
- Nitrogen (N₂)
- Water Vapor (H₂O)
This chemical process is called catalysis.

How Does a Catalytic Converter Work?
Though it may resemble a muffler from the outside, the catalytic converter is a highly engineered component made with precious metals like:
- Platinum
- Palladium
- Rhodium
- Along with aluminum oxide and cerium oxide
Inside, it contains a honeycomb structure coated with these materials, which facilitate chemical reactions at high temperatures (400°C / 750°F and above). Here’s how it works:
- Reduction Reaction – Converts NOx into nitrogen and oxygen
- Oxidation Reaction – Converts CO into CO₂, and HC into CO₂ + water
The result? Cleaner emissions that meet environmental standards and help reduce smog and pollution.
How Long Does It Last?
Most catalytic converters are built to last around 100,000 miles or 10+ years, provided the engine is properly maintained.
However, several conditions can significantly reduce its lifespan, such as:
- Running a rich fuel mixture (too much fuel, not enough air)
- Failing spark plugs or ignition coils
- Excessive unburned fuel entering the exhaust
Unburned fuel can overheat the CAT, potentially melting the internal structure and leading to failure.
Symptoms of a Failing Catalytic Converter & Custom Exhaust
A bad catalytic converter can be tricky to diagnose, as symptoms often mimic other engine issues. Common signs include:
- Check Engine Light (CEL)
- Engine hesitation or reduced power
- Decreased fuel economy
- Unusual exhaust smells (like sulfur or “rotten eggs”)
- Failed emissions tests
- Excess heat from under the vehicle
In some cases, a catalytic converter cleaner might help restore function temporarily, but most clogged or damaged units will need replacement.

6 Symptoms of a Bad Catalytic Converter
Knowing the Signs Before It Becomes a Bigger Problem
The catalytic converter plays a vital role in your vehicle’s emissions system by reducing harmful gases. When it starts to fail, it can affect engine performance, fuel efficiency, and even your ability to pass an emissions test. Here are six common symptoms that may indicate your catalytic converter is going bad:
Check Engine Light (CEL)
Because of its importance in the exhaust system, a failing catalytic converter will often trigger the Check Engine Light. Most modern vehicles have multiple trouble codes (DTCs) directly tied to CAT efficiency. If you see the CEL flash shortly after driving, it’s time to get a diagnostic scan.
Engine Hesitation During Acceleration
A clogged or damaged catalytic converter restricts the flow of exhaust gases, creating backpressure that affects engine performance. This is often felt as hesitation or sluggishness when you try to accelerate, especially during highway merging or climbing hills.
Engine Misfires
When the converter can’t handle the exhaust flow, it can cause misfires—where one or more cylinders fail to fire properly. Misfires not only reduce power but can also lead to further damage to the ignition and exhaust systems.
Increased Emissions
A worn-out or inefficient catalytic converter won’t properly convert harmful gases like hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, resulting in higher emissions. This can cause your vehicle to fail a smog or emissions test, especially in states with strict environmental regulations.
Possible Engine Overheating
In extreme cases, a severely clogged catalytic converter can cause the exhaust system to overheat. This buildup of pressure and heat may lead to the converter glowing red hot—and could even damage nearby components. If ignored, it could result in engine overheating or failure.
Strong Smell from Exhaust (Gas or Rotten Eggs)
If unburned fuel is reaching the exhaust due to poor combustion, you may notice a strong gasoline smell. As the catalytic converter degrades, it can also emit a rotten egg or sulfur-like odor—a sign that it’s failing to properly burn off hydrocarbon particles.
Need a Diagnosis? NavAuto1 Group Can Help
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t wait—ignoring catalytic converter issues can lead to costly repairs and poor vehicle performance. At NavAuto1 Group, our ASE-certified technicians can diagnose your emissions system using state-of-the-art tools and provide the best solution, whether it’s cleaning, repair, or full replacement.

Signs of Catalytic Converter Problems
- Poor Acceleration
If your vehicle suddenly feels sluggish or struggles to gain speed, a clogged or failing catalytic converter might be to blame. A restricted exhaust flow reduces engine performance and responsiveness. - Rotten-Egg Smell
A strong sulfur or rotten-egg odor from the exhaust typically indicates a buildup of hydrogen sulfide — a sign the catalytic converter isn’t effectively processing exhaust gases. - Check Engine Light
This light may come on due to misfires, faulty oxygen sensors, or fuel mixture issues — all of which can be related to or caused by catalytic converter problems. - Engine Shutdown or Failure to Start
In severe cases, a completely clogged catalytic converter can block exhaust flow, causing the engine to stall shortly after starting or fail to start at all. - Oxygen Sensor Issues Can Damage the Converter
- If a faulty O2 sensor sends incorrect data, the engine may run too rich (too much fuel in the mixture).
- Excess unburned fuel reaches the catalytic converter, causing it to overheat.
- Over time, this can melt or clog the ceramic core, permanently damaging the converter.
